Nixon... Yikes

Well... can't say that I'm the biggest fan of Nixon after that reading. Nixon seems to have acted based on what would best benefit him- not the people of the country. He blatantly ignored his advisors, failed to get support from Congress prior to acting in foreign relations, and even went as far as to taping the phones of his own advisors (I wouldn't doubt that he knew about the plan of the watergate scandal). This was a man who was driven by his "special passion for vengeance and control," Nixon did what was best for Nixon. Not only were his actions often motivated by his own political advancement, but he was also willing to deceive anyone to accomplish his goals. In the Patterson reading Nixon's secretive strategies (featuring cover-ups, hush money, and false statements to the public) are recognized as being his, in my words, "power moves." Other than his political motivations and secretive behavior, I wonder how much he ACTUALLY cared for the people, for example what was his reaction to the murders committed by the police? Especially those of the two women simply walking to class who were fatally shot. Patterson notes that Nixon was against the anti-war movement and the people of it, so did he believe that the shootings and injuries on the campuses via police officers were justified?
